The Associate Vice President for Advancement works closely with the Senior Vice President and the President in identifying and implementing ways to develop the resources necessary to further the university's mission.  This position also works closely with the Director of Communication, functioning with an active community relations role, designed to further the college's mission and visibility in the community.  This senior member of the development team is responsible for overall management of the major gifts program, with the primary responsibility for developing and executing strategies, programs and initiatives for the effective identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects.  This person will be responsible for the day-to-day management of Advancement team staff, processes, and reports.  This position will also monitor the opportunities to apply for significant government grants and develop strategies for successful applications.

  • Supervise a team of advancement professionals including gift officers, alumni relations, donor and church relations.
  • Develop appropriate training of advancement staff to assure maximum effectiveness.
  • Analyze existing advancement policies and procedures and identify areas for improved efficiencies.
  • Develop initiatives to connect with area organizations and community groups to share the university's message and cultivate opportunities for support.
  • Identify internal and external opportunities for the university to advance.
  • Serve in a community-relations role in terms of representing or selecting representatives to participate in community boards and events as needed.
  • Identify community leaders that should be introduced to the university and have the capacity to help advance the institution through strategic or financial support.  Implement strategies for university engagement and cultivation.
  • Collect, analyze, and distribute data from Jenzabar related to fundraising goals and achievements for both staff and university leadership.
  • Develop and oversee the allocation of departmental budget dollars for Advancement initiatives. 
  • Manage and direct donor stewardship, including special events and the 1862 Society.
  • Act as a major gift officer, maintaining an active prospect portfolio.
  • Engage alumni and community constituencies through events, gatherings and other activities so they are more likely to understand and support the mission of the college.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned. 



  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Strong communication skills: written, verbal and interpersonal.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and operate effectively within a team environment.
  • Experience in the areas of data management and analytics.
  • Experience managing teams.
  • Experience working with budgets.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer and common software applications.
  • Some evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Occasional travel may be required.



  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk;
  • Some limited physical effort required;
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
